I had the opportunity to go to Madrid for 24hours a few years ago, such a beautiful city.  My sweet dad and brother let me drag them to The Prado Museum and The Reina Sofia Museum.  Getting to see Guernica was breathtaking (it is so massive), and there was even a small Dali exhibit, but what really made the biggest impression on me was this painting.

i found her so striking, the painting is so dark and yet so vivid.  

i spotted this painting on design for mankind a few months ago and i found the two works so similar.  there is something about both of them that makes me just stare at them.

i've noticed a lot of things pertaining to the 7 deadly sins lately..it all started with a tosh.0 episode (watch the whole clip, then you'll get the reference) which is a weird place to start this post i suppose...but here's the other references i've stumbled across lately

wired magazine did a spread based on the research done by kansas state plotting per-capita stats of the 7 deadly sins (lust = std's; envy = theft; etc).  check out the maps, i found gluttony to be the most interesting...

i tried looking up the rest of the sins that were commissioned as part of the vienna design week, but i haven't been able to track any others down...let me know if you have better luck, i'd love to see how the others were interpreted! 

herkimer diamond

bobby got me diamond earrings! ok, not quite.  he got me a herkimer diamond earrings,  thus named after being found in  herkimer county, new york.  these "diamonds" are actually quartz crystals and i love them!  i also love moth house, the shop i snagged these from!

since these beauties came into my life i've been noticing more things with crystals and minerals and such...see for yourself!

chalk wall

i've been adding coats of chalkboard paint to a door for my studio. i think it just needs one or two more coats and then i'll have to figure out what to draw on it...i came across the work of kerb scrawl on design work life. These chalk illustrations are done in public spaces on blank concrete...i would smile if i walked by any one of these.

i've been trying to put the finishing touches on my new apt and realize i need some new art.

this print from etsy seller fifiduvie is coming to live with me soon(thanks jen for spotting it)...and i am excited to have this as a constant reminder.

speaking of adventures my family is coming into the city this weekend so i'll get to have some overdue nyc tourist adventures. hope you guys have a great weekend too!

solid gold recap!

What a fun night! Art, balloons, wine, friends, who could ask for more! This show was unlike any other, and the group made sure to make good on the name, Cheap Paper. Each artist had produced tons of pieces that were all mixed together of the walls. If you saw something you liked you simply found someone wearing a "make me an offer" tag and started bargaining. To my knowledge the show was wildly successful for a lot of the members of the collective. I helped...haha..i purchased a small piece by Jane Garver and my fiance, Bobby, surprised me with a piece by Katie Coleman! Here are some of my favorite works, in no particular order, and please check out my flickr for even more pics!

Dead or Alive

I recently visited the Dead or Alive exhibit at the Museum of Design in NYC. the exhibit included tons of beautiful work, all work was based around using and repurposing things found in the natural world or the reused of often discarded items. I loved the use of things often considered to be dirty to make beautiful works. These were a few of my favorites.

Kate Mcguire- While this is not the original piece at the exhibit her sculptures using feathers are breathtaking.

Fabian Pena- He uses insects and insect parts to create these illustrations, this one used roach wings.

Damien Hirst- This one made me think of you mare! He uses butterfly wings to make stain glass-esque collages. they are incredibly impressive in person.

Levi van Veluw- levi creates natural and manmade world's using the human body as a canvas.

solid gold

so i am pretty excited about this weekend, lots of fun things going on, but i am most excited about an art opening at mint gallery. the show is called "solid gold" and features works by the cheap paper artist collective. i've not yet been to mint (though i used to live a few doors down) so i'm excited to finally go. and i can't wait to check out what the lovely katie coleman has up in this show, i always love her work (true story, she's creating a piece for me that i can't wait for!). not out of the woods yet

I went to an art opening last Friday at Youngblood Gallery & Boutique for the show "Columns, Stack, Heaps and Piles" by Justin Richel. They were small scale works taken from his "Sweets" series. While I did like the show, the artwork was fun, bright and delicious, it got to be a lot of the same thing. However, I did realize that he is also responsible for creating two of the prints I covet everytime I go there! The works are from his "Big Wigs" series. I was able to snag this one to come home with me!
